I put some serious work into my painting today. I felt like I was feeling it today.
I didn’t really want to stop, but I went a little nuts with the retarder and the painting started getting a bit slimy and the tacky. Hopefully it will be dry by tomarrow so I can work on it some more. We will see.
Anywhoooo, here is the painting in its current state:

Black and White: Finished
Over the weekend I did another pass on each of the black and white images and got them to a stopping point. These are the final results.

And….

I am very pleased with the end results. I was not quite sure how they would turn out since the starting points for both of them were kind of vague….
Here are the sketches I transfered onto the boards after I painted them black.

and…

Like I said, kinda vague. But that kept working on the pieces a bit more fresh I think.
That’s all for now.

Here with an update. I have not touched the painting I am working on since I last updated. But I have been working on a couple pieces.
My friends at Drawl Graphic are putting together an art book of Black and White work. I have been asked to contribute. I have been working on 2 pieces for it thus far. A third one may follow.
Anyway, this is what I have been doing.

And…

Both are done with acrylic paint. Starting with an all black ground, then adding white on top.
The next step will be to refine and clean up the pieces before final scanning.
That is all.
Weekend Update
Here is the progress that has been made on the painting.

It’s moving forward.

Some work was done tonight on the new painting. I started blocking in lights and darks. It has a little more form to it now.

More later as it moves along.
New Project
I have alluded to an idea for a new painting on deck. I have begun work on it. This is not the painting I attempted to start a month or two ago on my giant canvas. This is smaller. I am excited about this one though, I think it could turn out pretty awesome. Time will tell. Anyway, on with the show.
This first image is the sketch that started the idea. I did this drawing with a mouse in Illustrator. A super quick 30 second doodle. I find those tend to have the best life to them. Invariably the aspects of this I enjoy most will become watered down as it becomes a painting, but that is the way it goes.

Next up is the full size drawing. Normally I like to print sketches I do out on many sheets of computer paper to make them big (though an opaque projector would be best…) but my printer is out of ink and I don’t feel like buying more. So I just re-drew this guy at size (16″x22″ I think). I played around a lot over the course of a few days with what I wanted to put on the page with the guy. This is what I settled on:

I then transferred the thing onto a canvas

And then toned the canvas with a reddish brown paint and re-outlined everything with red and laid out the background elements.

This is where I have stopped for now. Hopefully I will get some good solid painting time in this weekend and make some good headway. I am excited about this one.

New Digital Piece
Over this weekend I did some work turning one of the sketches from a previous post into a more finished piece. It is a combination of Illustrator and Photoshop work.
Here it is:

I wanted to work within a very limited color palette, using a strong color to achieve mood. The next two images are some process shots.
The first is the finished vector line work. Essentially a cleaned up trace of the sketch done in Illustrator.

The second is the color version straight out of illustrator. This is it, in it’s pure vector form before I “dirtied” it up in photoshop.

That’s it for this piece. I have also been working on refining and finalizing a composition for a new painting. Progress shots of that should be coming soon.
